The Push-Up: Fitness’s Most Underrated Exercise

Push-ups are often the go-to move for showing off physical strength, whether on TV or in movies. In Top Gun: Maverick, pilots perform hundreds of push-ups under the blazing sun, while Demi Moore amazed audiences in GI Jane with one-armed push-ups — a feat she even demonstrated on live television. Michelle Obama and Ellen DeGeneres once competed to see who could do more push-ups, with Obama emerging victorious. Despite these high-profile examples, many people might wonder if push-ups are truly as effective as they seem. Fitness experts say they absolutely are. Dr. Andrew Jagim, director of sports medicine research at the Mayo Clinic Health System, describes push-ups as one of the most undervalued exercises. Because they appear simple, they are often overlooked, yet when performed regularly, push-ups can significantly improve upper body strength, posture, core stability, and overall athletic performance. Trainer Mark Bohannon notes that how a person performs a push-up can reveal a great deal about their general movement quality. In addition to being highly informative, push-ups require no equipment and can be performed almost anywhere.

Performing a push-up correctly engages the entire body. Starting in a plank position, hands are placed slightly outside shoulder width while the feet can be positioned close together for difficulty or wider apart for stability. This stance activates the chest, shoulders, arms, core, and glutes, requiring full-body stabilization throughout the movement. Lowering the body with elbows at roughly a 45-degree angle until the chest nearly touches the floor, and then pressing back up while maintaining a straight line from head to heels, ensures proper form. This continuous alignment is crucial; mistakes such as letting the hips sag or dropping the head are common and reduce effectiveness. To maintain proper posture, one should brace the core and tighten the glutes, while also moving in a controlled, deliberate manner rather than rushing through repetitions. Slow, precise movements maximize muscle engagement and minimize the risk of injury.
For those who cannot perform standard push-ups initially, easier variations provide a starting point. Wall push-ups, incline push-ups using a bench, or knee push-ups all allow beginners to develop strength while maintaining proper form. As strength increases, more challenging variations like decline push-ups, tricep push-ups with elbows tucked, or weighted push-ups can be introduced. Integrating push-ups into a fitness routine does not need to be time-consuming; short sessions of a few minutes at the beginning or end of workouts twice a week can be sufficient. Progressing through plank holds, negative push-ups, or isometric holds builds both strength and control while maintaining proper alignment. Using elevated surfaces can help preserve form as strength develops.
It is important to recognize when push-ups may not be appropriate. Individuals with shoulder injuries or impingements should avoid this exercise, while push-up handles can help reduce wrist strain and support proper shoulder positioning. Guidance from a personal trainer can ensure safe practice. For those who truly dislike push-ups, alternative exercises such as dumbbell or machine chest presses target many of the same muscles, though they do not offer the full-body stabilization and engagement benefits inherent to push-ups. Often, a dislike of push-ups stems from poor instruction or repeated failed attempts, but with proper regression and gradual progression, most people find they can improve both their ability and enjoyment of the exercise over time.
