Despite their current popularity, daffodils only became widely appreciated as garden plants in the late 19th century, long after tulips had dominated the gardening scene.
When people picture a daffodil, the classic bright yellow trumpet-shaped flower often comes to mind. However, the diversity within daffodils is greater than expected. Estimates range from about 50 to 200 species in the Narcissus genus. Most species are native to the Iberian Peninsula and the mountain regions of Morocco and Algeria. The typical daffodil flower consists of six petals arranged around a central corona, also known as a trumpet or cup. While yellow is the most common flower color, varieties also come in white, pink, and orange shades. Daffodils are hardy bulbs that survive winters in USDA zones 3 through 8.

Breeding and Cultivation History

Though daffodil bulbs never reached the exorbitant market prices seen during the "tulip mania" period, they have long been prized. By 1910, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recorded nearly 2,500 named daffodil varieties. Today, around 32,000 cultivars are registered globally, but only about 10% are commercially available. The daffodil’s popularity was largely driven by plant breeders fascinated by the species and eager to enhance their qualities. Records of daffodils in gardens and hybrid varieties date back to the 1600s and 1700s. The 19th century marked a surge in daffodil hybridization efforts, starting in England and Scotland, then spreading to Ireland, the Netherlands, the USA, New Zealand, and southern Australia. William Herbert of Manchester conducted extensive research and crossbreeding, revealing that many garden and wild daffodils were hybrids. Edward Leeds contributed significantly by creating hybrids involving Narcissus poeticus, known for its white petals and yellow corona tinged with red. Peter Barr helped popularize mass plantings of daffodils in naturalized landscapes. Currently, most commercial daffodil cultivars are bred in the Netherlands, with some breeders located in the western United States and even in Virginia at Brent & Becky's Bulbs.

Classification System

Due to the vast number of species and cultivars, organizations like the American Daffodil Society (established in 1954) and the RHS developed a classification system dividing daffodils into 13 categories. These range from Division 1 — Trumpet Daffodils — to Division 13, which includes wild species and natural hybrids. Miniature daffodils, with flowers smaller than two inches in diameter, are classified similarly to larger types. Additionally, color codes for the petals (perianth) and corona were introduced by Dr. Throckmorton of Iowa and adopted by the RHS in 1975. This system helps gardeners identify, categorize, and even enter their plants in daffodil competitions and shows.

Planting and Care

The best time to plant daffodil bulbs is from October through early November, allowing roots to establish before the soil freezes. Cool night temperatures below 55°F encourage root development. Traditional planting involves digging a hole, placing the bulb inside, and covering it with soil. Though this method is effective, providing well-prepared soil rich in humus will yield better results. Daffodils prefer loamy soil and enjoy sunny locations, though they can tolerate partial shade. Too much shade often leads to leafy growth without flowers, a condition known as "coming up blind."
Proper planting depth is crucial — bulbs should be planted at a depth twice their height. For striking visual clusters, bulbs can be spaced 2 to 3 inches apart, but over time this can cause overcrowding, so 4 to 6 inches spacing is generally recommended. Labeling cultivars is helpful, especially if wildlife or weather tends to disturb plant markers. Keeping a garden diagram and noting bloom times for early, mid, and late-season varieties allows for an extended flowering display in your garden.
After flowering, the daffodil leaves tend to flop and may look untidy. Although it might be tempting to trim them back, it’s important to leave the foliage intact until it turns yellow and dies naturally. The leaves continue to photosynthesize, supplying energy back to the bulb for next year’s blooms. Some gardeners braid the leaves, but this reduces their surface area and ability to produce food for the bulb. It’s best to let the foliage grow naturally.
