Many of today’s models integrate artificial intelligence, allowing them to make decisions and interact more naturally.

In fact, the concept dates back decades. In the 1930s, engineers at Westinghouse Electric Corporation created “Elektro,” a robot standing about 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall. It could walk, speak hundreds of words, inflate balloons, and even simulate smoking. Debuting at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, Elektro is widely considered one of the earliest humanoid robots ever showcased to the public.

Fast forward more than 80 years, and advances in technology have enabled the creation of sophisticated humanoid robots designed for far more than entertainment. Today’s robots can mimic human speech, behavior, and even emotional cues using AI and machine learning. They are built for practical uses such as caregiving, customer service, industrial work, research, space missions, and emergency response.

Below are five of the most lifelike humanoid robots, focusing on their realistic appearance and expressive capabilities. The list is not ranked.

Sophia

Sophia is a humanoid robot developed by Hanson Robotics, a Hong Kong-based company specializing in AI-driven robots for healthcare, research, and entertainment.

Activated on February 14, 2016, Sophia quickly gained global recognition for its human-like face and ability to display emotions. It has appeared at numerous public events and conferences, including CES and a United Nations AI summit in Geneva.

Sophia uses AI and neural networks to process language, hold conversations, maintain eye contact, and synchronize gestures with speech. It can also interpret human emotions and body language. Through machine learning, it improves its responses over time.

According to its creator, David Hanson, Sophia was designed for roles such as assisting the elderly, customer service, therapy, and education. In 2017, Saudi Arabia granted Sophia citizenship, making it the first robot to receive legal status. It also serves as an Innovation Ambassador for a UN development program.

Ameca

Ameca is a humanoid robot created by the UK-based company Engineered Arts. It was first introduced in late 2021 and later demonstrated at CES 2022.

Equipped with cameras and microphones, Ameca can recognize faces, voices, and emotions. Its modular design allows independent movement of the head, torso, arms, and facial features, enabling highly realistic expressions such as blinking and subtle gestures. Developers are also working on adding walking capabilities.

Ameca can communicate in multiple languages and runs on the Tritium 3 operating system, which supports remote control and rapid response times. It is primarily used for AI research, human-robot interaction studies, exhibitions, and customer-facing roles.

Geminoid DK

Released in 2011, Geminoid DK is known for its striking realism. It was modeled after Danish professor Henrik Scharfe and developed through collaboration between Japanese roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro, ATR, and Kokoro.

The robot features a metal framework covered in silicone skin, along with real and artificial hair. Notably, it was the first Geminoid modeled after a non-Japanese individual and the first to include a beard, carefully crafted to match its human counterpart.

Geminoid DK uses pneumatic actuators to create facial and upper-body movements, including breathing and blinking. However, it relies on remote operation, mirroring the movements and expressions of a human operator via motion capture. It is mainly used to study how people react to highly human-like robots.

Nadine

Nadine is a social humanoid robot designed to resemble Professor Nadia Magnenat Thalmann. It was developed at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore in 2015.

Its hardware was produced by Kokoro, while NTU researchers developed the software and hand articulation system. Nadine is designed to function as a receptionist or companion, especially for individuals with special needs. It can read stories, display images, send emails, and facilitate video calls.

Using AI, Nadine can communicate in six languages, recognize faces, remember past interactions, and respond appropriately. It can also show emotions and adjust its mood based on how it is treated.

The robot operates using a Perception-Decision-Action framework: it gathers data through sensors, processes the information to understand context, and then performs actions such as speaking or gesturing.

BINA48

BINA48 differs from the others as it consists only of a head and shoulders mounted on a frame. It was created by Hanson Robotics in collaboration with entrepreneur Martine Rothblatt and the Terasem Movement.

This project explores digital consciousness and the concept of preserving human identity through “mindfiles”—digital records of a person’s memories, personality, beliefs, and experiences.

BINA48 was modeled after Bina Aspen, Rothblatt’s wife. Developers compiled over 100 hours of her personal data to create a digital personality embedded within the robot’s AI system.

As a result, BINA48 can engage in human-like conversation and has been described as one of the most “aware” robots. It acknowledges its identity as a robotic version of a real person and expresses limitations, such as wanting to perform human activities it cannot physically do.

The name stands for “Breakthrough Intelligence via Neural Architecture,” with “48” referencing its processing capabilities. It features dozens of facial motors, enabling a wide range of expressions, and can access the internet to answer questions.

Overall, humanoid robots have evolved dramatically—from simple mechanical performers to intelligent systems capable of meaningful interaction. As technology advances, their role in everyday life is expected to grow even further.
